Painting Warhammer

I have been fascinated by Warhammer since I discovered it as a teenager. But before I moved to Europe, it was never an option. Nowadays, though, it has become much more available and accessible. I think they even sold introductory sets in newspaper kiosks at one point. So I finally decided to give it a try.
What I wanted to paint were T’au from Warhammer 40K, but I decided to practice on a starter set first. Since I didn’t want to paint Space Marines vs. Tyranids, I went with Age of Sigmar’s Stormcast vs. Skaven.
What can I say… the miniatures are small. I’m glad I had my laser surgery last year, and I’m not even joking.

I haven’t held a paintbrush since I was 9, so that’s another challenge. And the paintbrush that comes with them is indeed shitty. So I ended up buying a set of artistic brushes as well. Not sable, as a single sable brush costs an entire set.

I’m glad I bought a painting handle. Very useful for finishing touches. And I’m sorry that I laughted at the water pot initially. Now I can’t find it anywhere.

Kingdom Come Deliverance

What I love about this game is the honest loot. You killed a Cuman with your sax? Now you get his helm, and his sword, and his shield, and even his blodied kaftan.

Kingdom-Come-Deliverance-Screenshot-2024-12-28-00-07-03-29

There’s a quest where two bandits are hunting for a stableboy who is a witness. I tried to face them head-on, and they obliterated me. Then I tried picking them one by one, but even one of them was too much. So I found their camp, killed one of them in his sleep, hid his body in case it spooks the other one, waited until night and kill the second one in the same manner. Lowly? Yes. But those were bad people.

Speaking of witnesses, at some point the game turns into LA Noire. You have to look for clues and question witnesses to find the bandits behind a raid. Which is good, because looking for clues means that I don’t need to fight, as my character is very bad at fighting at this point.

Persona 2 Eternal Punishment

They tought that the burning museum episode was great, apparently, so you have to do it again. Yes, PSX version also has the heatwave effect, although it’s not that good. Don’t know if they made it easier, or I simply knew the trick, but I did manage to complete this without a problem in 10 minutes instead of 30.
The game makes very little sense without Innocent Sin, as at one point Maya asks if anyone could hear a girl: as she rescued the Cosplayer in the Other World there. And then Tatsuya flies the zeppelin, saying “he seen how it’s done once”. It’s Maya from the Other World that showed him.

North Water

Finished watching North Water.
It’s only 5 episodes, ideal format, but is a very heavy show. Especially the animal cruelty, like the hunting of seals and whales.
My main issue with the story is that Drax is something between an animal and the Devil, as most of the evil comes from him. Maybe it’s the idea, though, as at one point characters start to refer to him as The Devil.
Also, I feel that I read the story with the white bear somewhere else.
Interesting that Jack O’Connell (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1925239/?ref_=tt_cst_t_1) plays here very similar role as in another beloved miniseries: Godless.

Eureka Mignon Libra 65

The release of Eureka Mignon Libra 65 is a very interesting decision, and not because of the 65mm burrs.

The original Eureka Mignon Libra with 55mm burrs was one of two options for grind-by-weight at home (price range less than 1000GBP). It did a lot of things right: it’s very accurate, and compact.

But it’s ergonomics are terrible. Shitty bean hopper. Dial that doesn’t track the global position of the burrs. The nozzle is to far away, so the grounds fly all over. And there’s no tray to collect them.

As Eureka Mignon in general are quite popular grinders, though, enthusiast 3D-printed solutions for most of those problems. I bought a premium glass hopper from one of Eureka resellers, there’s a dial kit and a nozzle, and also a tray, which I have.

What Eureka did, it seems, is integrated most of those solutions into their new model. Now there’s a better hopper, better dial and a nozzle. They’re only missing the tray now.

Persona 2 Eternal Punishment

This game takes place in an alternative version of the world known as The Other Side, and the main protagonist is now Maya. In this world Jun’s father is alive, so Jun is not the Joker, and Joker is much simpler – just killing the people you wish would be dead.

Retro-Arch-Screenshot-2025-01-18-23-37-44-96
Contact system was slightly reworked, now each character has just one phrase, so there’s less guesswork. But the PSX version doesn’t have the mood tracker PSP version had, so you have to remember how many times the persona has already reacted.
Another thing PSX version doesn’t have is the persona compatibility indicator, so you have to remember how many MP persona usually costs, and how many MP is required when you equip it on a character.

Retro-Arch-Screenshot-2025-01-19-18-05-14-99
In this world, King Leo is not just an arsonist, but a serial murderer. He’s also the son of a minister, so he’s admitted to an asylum, until becoming Joker and getting superpowers.

Warhammer 40K Tacticus

Unlocked Kut from “guaranteed” requisition. This isn’t great, as he’s a cheap character, but also not too bad, as he’s useful in Fall of Cadia Mirror campaign.

And from guaranteed milestone reward also unlocked Azrael. Epic character sounds great, but I’m investing into characters needed for the campaigns.

Unlocked Sybill from grinding her encounter. Now I need just Thadeous for the Fall of Cadia Mirror, but it’s a big “just”, as we are talking 100 shards there.

Finally, unlocked Eldryon. This is a huge one, as he’s considered one of the most useful characters in the game, amplifying damage for other characters, and unlocks the Eldar campaign.

Coldest City

I decided to read “Coldest City” on which Atomic Blonde is based.

It’s much simpler, really, less flashy. Not just in the way it looks, all black and white, no grays. But in the way the story is told.
There’s no fight in the car after the airport. Percival just picks Loraine up. He’s also plain guy in his ’50s, not a crazy bartender James McAvoy portrays. And of course there’s no French lesbian. Instead there’s much more conventional French guy.

When Loraine tries to extract Spyglass, there’s just a single shooter, not half a dozen. And when police arrives at her appartment, she doesn’t beat them up, instead the French spy scares them off.
And now to the plot twists. First one is interesting, as the entire story with the list of spies might have been a ploy. And the second point is that Loraine is just a double-agent, not a triple-agent, like in the movie.

Persona 2 Innocent Sin

Completed Persona 2 Innocent Sin.
I haven’t mentioned the dungeons in Persona 2, and that’s because they are horrible. They are ugly mazes that lack any logic and made to be annoying with invisible traps that often impossible to avoid. Xibalba, the final dungeon / alien spaceship, is the epytomy of everything wrong with them. It’s 8 floors of annoyance.

Retro-Arch-Screenshot-2025-01-18-16-28-46-03
Storywise, it’s a fun concept, though, were all the fears come true. So when one character says that there might be laser traps, and another is afraid to be locked in an oven room: both things happen. And Michele has to face metalic version of his father, because that’s what he’s afraid of.

Retro-Arch-Screenshot-2025-01-17-22-59-13-86
I managed to beat the final boss with the default personas, and my characters were only around level 57 or so. So I honestly thought there will be another dungeon after that.

Retro-Arch-Screenshot-2025-01-18-21-06-36-47
The ending is disappointing, and it feels to me that they just decided to split the game in two. After beating Niarhalotep, Crazy Teacher appears and stabs Maya with Longinus spear, so she cannot be healed. Nia says something along the lines, “what did you expect, to beat a god and defy a profecy?” and Philimone offers to “try another time”. This is a common theme in Shin Megami Tensei games, where at the end heroes are offered to either forget everything or continue suffering: Persona 3 and Devil Summoner 2 are two examples I remember, and I didn’t play that many games in the series.

Sierra Nevada Narwhal Imperial Stout

Since I was already ordering some US imperial stouts from Dragon Milk, I decided to give another American Imperial Stout a try.
This one is good, but not that good, with a bitter aftertaste. Not terrible by any means, but I can find better Imperials closer to home.

Persona 2 Innocent Sin

I went to the Aquarius temple first, so I didn’t understand why Longinus said to Jun “you don’t know who this seat is intended for”. The second temple I did was Scorpio, and its boss is Shadow Michele. Turns out Persona 4 just repeats the concept of shadows from Persona 2.
Michele’s plotline is quite touching, though, albeit simple: he was a fat kid, so he liked the only girl that threated him well.
When they grew up, he became fit, and she got fat, so she hid her identity (they are all using nicknames anyway, Michele is Ekichi’s nickname), then sold her soul to Joker in order to be beautiful.

Dragon’s Milk Crimson Keep

I think American food and beer has a lot of bad rep. But once they set on something, they make it the best in the world.
I was very impressed by Dragon’s Milk Stout. But I must say that their Red Ale might be even better. Same richness, and more fruitiness. Looking forward to try the Golden Ale now.

Persona 2 Innocent Sin

Because the rumors are coming true, we meet the ghost of Maia in the temple, despite her never dying there.
After Nazis appear and all characters (except Yukki, because she’s from the previous game) get upgraded personas, there’s a difficulty spike. But nothing that can’t be resolved by grinding. Tatsuya’s Vulcanus Prime also gets an amazing Fiery Fury skill. As I mentioned, skills in Persona 2 have three target types: single, group and “all”, with “all” being the best. Why wouldn’t you like to hit all your enemies after all? Well, one reason is that some enemies are resistant to fire attacks. But here the second part of this skill comes into play: it doubles as physical attack as well. So it’s basically effective against everything.
Yukki gets a new persona too, but only for a short while, as she leaves the party after her boyfriend is killed by the Nazis. We manage to rescue Jun/Joker from Niarlotep (never expected so much Lovecraft influence). Turns out it’s Jun’s father who has been leading the Masked Circle, not Jun. Jun replaces Yukki as a party member, and all the party members get new personas once again. This time really new, instead of adding “Prime” to the name of the persona.
Now party need to beat 4 temples, one for each element. At the end of the first temple Jun gets persona mutation, first time in the game.

I think this game is easier than most other games in the series, because money solves everything. Items are cheap and you can stock tons of them, so you never run out of SP. And your SP also recovers with every step. Compare that to the stingy mechanics from Persona 4, where SP regen was one of the later skills, and SP recovery items were limited.

Monkey Man

John Wick has changed action movies for good.

This is “John Wick” Indian style. The rolls, use of environment as weapons, like hitting with a tray, and all the other tricks.

It’s magical, the amout of abuse hero can withstain, but also realistic, exemplified with the attempt to jump through a window “movie style”. Trying to tie it all together into a Hanuman myth was a good option.

I’m not sure how the second half of the movie works, though, as I don’t believe repicursiosn for the transgender community in India is on everyone’s mind. And using fireworks as weapons perhaps not the most efficient, when you have guns? But it’s good visuals for sure.

Eden Mill Art of St Andrews

24th and last bottle of my 2024 calendar. Took me exactly a year to finish it.
This one is interesting, as I completely missed the mark. It’s nice, a bit sweet, a bit smoky, not too warm. I placed it in 50GBP cathegory.
Turns out, this is the most expensive taster I think in the entire calendar: 114GBP at minimum, up to 150GBP:
https://www.masterofmalt.com/whiskies/eden-mill/eden-mill-single-malt-scotch-whisky-2022-release-art-of-st-andrews-collection-whisky/

All I can say, this isn’t the first 150GBP+ bottle that didn’t impress me.

North Water

“Maybe cleverness will get you nowhere. Maybe it’s only the stupid, the brilliantly stupid, who will inherit the Earth”

1859, England. A whaler “Volunteer” sails to Greenland. Only the captain and a couple of the crew members know, that the goal of this voyage is to sink the whaler and get the insurance money. Sails are obsolete, steam is the future. And there are no more whales anyway.
Writing is technically very impressive. We have the complete opposites: Sumner and Drax. Sumner is a surgeon. Drax is a harpooner. Sumner is addicted to laundaum. Drax likes to drink. Sumner reads Homer. Drax can’t even read.

Drax is also extremely violent. He kills a man with a brick for not buying him a drink. He enjoys hunting seals. But maybe it is the man you want on your boat when your purpose is to hunt and kill whales, a cold blooded killer?

The movie is brutal for sure. The skinning of seals, whale hunt and 19th Century medicine such as draining puss all shown in great detail. Not for the faint-hearted for sure.

Migration

I’m surprised we are still able to produce good animation, and not just trash. But Migration is very impressive. The herons, the pigeons, the Jamaican parrot. I mean, I didn’t even know we are allowed to do accents anymore, when everything is offensive.

The tricks are mostly classic, villain looking over one side of the column, heroes hiding over the other. But then, there are surprising animation twists borrowing from Nickelodeon (the pleeeeeeease, for example).

Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare

It’s Inglorious Bastards all over again, but it isn’t a bad thing. We have characters switching between English and German on the go, and an educated villain played by Til Sweiger instead of Christoph Waltz.
You can also view it as a James Bond movie, with cool characters shooting from the hip while cracking jokes.
The most interesting bit is that the craziest parts are actually true. An SOE agent did set up a party on Fernando Po to lure Italian and German officers away. And the crew did employ locals to steal the boats, and did blow the anchor chain with explosives. Only all the killing didn’t happen.
The saddest part is that in real life, no participant of that operation survived until the end of the war. Henry Cavils character, Gus, died on the very next mission, while his team got lost in France and bumped into a patrol. And Anders was killed in ’45, storming an Italian bunker line.

Warhammer 40K Tacticus

I’m making slow progress. Unlocked Snappawrecka from the arena battles. This means I have just one more orc character to open for their campaign.

Unlocked Tutmose from slowly grinding his battle. The character is supposed to be extremely bad, but it’s 4th Necron character, so battles that allow up to 5 should be easier.

In a last ditch effort in a event I also managed to unlock Nicodemus. I already have 5 Imperial characters, but Ultramarines Apothecary isn’t very good, and Nicodemus is available to unlock only once in a while.

Unlocked Snotflogga from Salvage Run. This isn’t as good as I thought it to be, because Snotflogga isn’t a campaign character for Orcs, so I’m still missing Boss Gulgortz, and missing it by some 125/250 shards.

Unlocked Tsonji in an Incursion event. As I mentioned, Machines of War are not very useful, but I still use every opportunity to unlock new characters. And I love Tau. Who doesn’t love huge mechs?

And I finally completed Indominus campaign, with 3 stars, unlocking Indominus Elite.

Kingdom Come Deliverance

Magnificent. Unexpectedly cinematographic, with some cutscenes taking minutes and reminding me of Witcher a lot. The gameplay itself is more of a Operation Flashpoint and Gothic. With vague objectives that you can achieve in multiple ways and people that care about their property on many levels. Not only villagers will chase you if you try to steal something or pick a lock, but even standing by their house will alert them.

Kingdom-Come-Deliverance-Screenshot-2024-12-26-18-15-47-29
Some crimes are less obvious than others, though. For example, walking at night without a torch is a crime.

Kingdom-Come-Deliverance-Screenshot-2024-12-27-23-38-22-12
The fighting system is… different, and it also reminds me of Gothic in a way. You chose one of five different angles to attack from, and you defent by predicting from which angle your opponent will attack based on his stance.

Kingdom-Come-Deliverance-Screenshot-2024-12-26-21-14-42-97
Some opponents will also try to run away, and then you can choose if you want to let them go and on what conditions.
